Step up, future leaders!

2018-09-04T13:44:18+00:00

I had the opportunity to write and record a piece for WNIJ (the local NPR affiliate) and their Perspectives program.  I spoke about the importance of youth engagement.  Give it a listen. Here is the text: In today's world, the ongoing discord in “grown-up” national politics is becoming more pronounced, with an ever-shrinking middle ground and fewer common goals. A fresh point of view can alter the playing field and provide positive change. This is a call to action for all young people to get involved in any capacity. Winnebago County Chairman Frank Haney, Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara and [...]

Gun Laws

2018-09-04T13:41:32+00:00

The Florida shooting is yet another reminder of the inaction of our government with regard to gun laws. America has more mass shootings than any other country and most of these are carried out by white males. It is shameful of media organizations to continue to instill the double standard of labeling these horrid men as "lone wolves" or "mentally unstable" while simultaneously blaming any attack done by a minority as the product of terrorist motives or gang or thug behavior. "Thoughts and prayers" are clearly not enough as tragedies like Parkland continue to happen year after year and seem to [...]

Things to remember this 4th of July

2018-09-04T13:37:42+00:00

We have all been fortunate enough to see another 4th of July this year and celebrate the birth of our great nation. Through perilous times and tests of our patience, perseverance, and faith, we have continued to come together as Americans when it has mattered most. However, there are still some things I would like you all to consider today as we reflect on our own freedom: Remember the indigenous people of America who are the true founders of our nation that continue to fight for their rights to the land they have loved for centuries. Remember the LGBTQ+ community that [...]

Black Lives Matter

2018-09-04T13:27:41+00:00

Alton Sterling. Philando Castile. Trayvon Martin. Tamir Rice. And so many more. Racism is real. It is the most prominent issue of our generation. We have been brainwashed to think it was over since the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King would be devastated. This blog may be called the Muslim "Moderate" but this is an issue I cannot be moderate about. People's lives are being taken away due to excessive force and unjustified fear. Police officers killing innocent man. What do they have to fear if they are the ones pointing the gun? I am not saying everyone situation is like [...]

Terror

2018-09-04T13:19:35+00:00

A few hours ago, a mass shooting happened in Orlando. 50 dead and 53 injured, making it the largest mass shooting in American history. Numerous issues arise from this incident. An assault type weapon was used, which continues to question the use of firearms. The shooting was at a gay nightclub, which exemplifies anti gay behavior. However, the biggest issue that arises from an incident like this comes from the shooter. Omar Saddiqui Mateen has been identified as the attacker. Due to the fact that this man was Muslim, authorities already assume the attack as an act of terror. Yes, I [...]

Thoughts on the $20 bill

2018-09-04T13:21:47+00:00

Recent changes have been made to American currency. Changes that are wonderful. Changes that will hopefully spark a new found ideal for an equal world. Deciding to put Harriet Tubman, a national hero, on the face of the twenty dollar bill is a great change. It shows that America is moving in the right direction. However, with every change, there is a backlash. And this time is no different. Once again, people are blinded by some false ideology that change is bad and a waste. People are saying that completely redesigning a bill is a waste of money, between the cost of [...]
